I studied architecture at ITESM Mexico City where I was taught the importance of sustainability in architecture. While studying, my projects were about integral design where architecture is engineering, sustainability, structure and human comfort.
Thereafter, I joined BIOMAH Architects & Consultants, bureau that designs green buildings and provides consultancy services to other architects. Among my responsibilities, I was in charge of assessing energy performance of buildings. This involved assessing performance of facades, in terms of u-values, solar gains, shading devices and natural ventilation. Other calculations involved water harvesting strategies as well as water use recycling, energy production, and efficient use of HVAC.
Following that, I joined TECHO, a non-profit organization, which seeks to overcome poverty in slums, through the joint work of families living in extreme poverty and youth volunteers. During my time here, among other things, I was part of the Construction Staff, where I took many roles. First, I started as a normal volunteer taking part in the construction of emergency wood houses. Near the end in my time there, I was in charge of the construction logistics of a community, where we built 13 emergency wood houses. Throughout, my time in TECHO, I learned about collaborative work and the importance of communication in a large organization like this.
After this, I joined CIVITA, a bureau that provides energy performance and LEED consultancy. Among my responsibilities I was in charge of follow-up work of LEED Construction Credits for the projects held in Mexico City. This was a field work where I was constantly in contact with the contractors, in order to check whether the strategies to acquire LEED credits were being followed.
Throughout my work in this practices, I realized the importance of the facade in sustainability. If an envelope is not correctly designed the sustainability targets will not be able to be met. Therefore is the most important part of a building and should not be compromised.
